Kangaroo Incentive Boost to Ease Grazing Pressure

South Australian producers will receive increased support to manage surging kangaroo numbers, with the State lifting its removal incentive from $5 to $7 a head.

Populations have climbed beyond five million after several favourable seasons, but drought conditions are now leaving many animals starving and placing heavy pressure on crops and pastures.

The revised payment, effective from 20 February 2026, aligns landholder incentives with commercial harvester rates and recognises rising labour, fuel and ammunition costs.

The Reducing Grazing Pressure through Kangaroo Management Program, led by Department of Primary Industries and Regions in partnership with Landscape Boards and industry, will remain open until funds are exhausted.

Producers must continue to provide appropriate evidence to maintain program integrity.

The increase aims to ease feed competition and protect both agricultural production and native vegetation during the ongoing dry period.
