Growers Warn of Price Rises Amid Escalating Costs

Australia’s vegetable growers say they are being forced to pass on rising production costs, as global instability places increasing pressure on the industry.

AUSVEG says the conflict in the Middle East has driven up the cost of key inputs including fuel, fertiliser and freight, compounding already high operating expenses.

It says growers have limited capacity to absorb further increases after years of declining margins and rising costs.

The organisation warns that without stronger cooperation across the supply chain, including buyers and retailers, more producers may leave the industry.

It says this could have implications for long-term food security and the stability of domestic fresh produce supply.

AUSVEG says vegetables remain one of the most affordable and nutritious options for consumers, and is calling for agriculture to be prioritised in fuel allocation and national planning around fertiliser supply.
