The Federal Government has launched a new three-million-dollar sustainability initiative aimed at helping Australia’s sheep producers improve climate resilience and on-farm environmental performance.
The three-year Green Sheep Project was unveiled at Tasmania’s Agfest field days, with pilot programs to begin shortly in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.
The project will provide producers with practical tools to measure environmental outcomes, improve grazing and pasture management, and better track natural capital on farm.
Workshops, demonstrations and training sessions will also be delivered through Natural Resource Management and Landcare partner organisations.
The initiative is being led by Sheep Producers Australia, which represents around twenty-thousand sheep meat producers nationally.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says the program will help strengthen productivity, food security and Australia’s competitiveness in global markets, while supporting farmers to adapt to changing climate conditions.
