As another strong harvest approaches, GrainGrowers has released a report identifying Australia’s priority grain freight routes and key infrastructure bottlenecks slowing the movement of millions of tonnes of grain.
The report, Australia’s Priority Grain Freight Routes, highlights the critical role of local and regional roads, ageing bridges, and gaps in freight networks that reduce efficiency and increase costs for growers.
GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said the report shows how challenges differ across states.
“Grain freight in Australia is not a one-size-fits-all task. From bridge weight limits at the New South Wales–Victorian border to local road pressures in Western Australia, these bottlenecks add costs and reduce efficiency for growers,” Ms Gawel said.
The study also warns of climate-related disruptions on key corridors and calls for greater cross-border coordination. Ms Gawel said policymakers should use the findings to prioritise investment.
“This report fills a long-standing information gap and provides a clear picture of where targeted investment will deliver the greatest benefit,” she said.
