GRAIN DUST LIMITS QUESTIONED AHEAD OF HARVEST

Grain Producers Australia is questioning the scientific evidence behind new workplace grain dust exposure limits, warning the changes could be difficult for growers to meet.

The revised standards are scheduled to take effect nationally on December 1, following a review by Safe Work Australia and agreement from workplace health and safety ministers.

GPA says the assessment relied on a 2011 Dutch study drawing on North American research from 1982 and 1983, raising concerns about the age and relevance of the evidence.

The organisation also argues the research covered a broader range of grains than the Australian standard, which specifically applies to oats, wheat and barley.

GPA chair Matthew Madden says the proposed limit could impose an unreasonable regulatory burden on growers, particularly during harvest.

Victoria and South Australia have delayed implementation, with GPA calling for regulators to reconsider the scientific basis of the changes.
