Australian grain producers are facing rising uncertainty as global conflicts threaten access to key farm inputs.
Grain Producers Australia Chair Barry Large says recent military action in the Middle East has laid bare Australia’s reliance on international supply chains.
He said the short disruption in June 2025, when Israel and the United States engaged in attacks on Iran, showed how quickly global events can impact the prices and availability of crucial farming resources, including fuel, fertiliser and machinery.
Mr Large warned that while grain prices may rise in response, many farmers entering winter sowing are not in a position to take advantage.
He also says strong domestic policies are needed to protect growers and maintain Australia’s reputation as a reliable global food supplier.
“Food security is about more than what we grow,” he said. “It’s about resilient supply chains, reliable inputs, and strong biosecurity systems that keep food flowing in uncertain times.”
GPA continues to advocate for local manufacturing and improved domestic supply chains, urging the Federal Government to prioritise policies that strengthen resilience and protect productivity.
