Fire-affected landholders urged to prepare for storm damage

Fire-affected landholders in Victoria are being urged to prepare properties for potential flash flooding and erosion following recent bushfires.

Authorities warn that bare ground, water-repellent soils and steep terrain significantly increase the risk of debris flows during thunderstorms.

Floodwater and sediment can damage fences, tracks, dams, water supplies, buildings and livestock, particularly in hilly and mountainous areas.

Landholders are advised to install sediment traps, debris fences and small levee banks to slow water flow and protect critical infrastructure.

Livestock should be moved away from low-lying areas, while tank inlets and downpipes should be protected from ash and contamination.

Further guidance on post-fire land and water management is available through Agriculture Victoria.
