Taking control of your finances can feel overwhelming, but award-winning author and financial educator Melissa Browne is on a mission to show women that it doesn’t have to be.

Known for her best-selling book Unf*ck Your Finances and her work helping thousands of women navigate money matters, Melissa is back in 2026 with her latest release, Dare to Be Wealthy.

Speaking with FlowFM’s Jessica Dempster in the lead-up to her book's release, Melissa reflected on how she unexpectedly found her way into finance.

“I am absolutely an accidental finance person,” she said.

After starting out studying law at university, Melissa shifted to accounting - largely because of family influence - without initially feeling overly passionate about the industry. It wasn’t until a challenging period following her first divorce, where she faced debt and financial instability, that she realized the importance of financial literacy.

“That period of rebuilding was when I figured out how to come back from debt, rebuild my business, and start investing,” she said.

For Melissa, this experience highlighted a broader issue: many women face gaps in financial knowledge and confidence.

She says Dare to Be Wealthy builds on the practical guidance of her first book but focuses specifically on women’s unique financial challenges.

The book explores the social pressures that hold women back from wealth, the ways women are often better investors than men, and how life stages like perimenopause and menopause intersect with financial decisions.

She emphasises that women often outlive men and are usually disproportionately financially hindered by divorce, making financial independence essential.

"Dare to Be Wealthy puts my story in it more than ever before, and really starts to look at why do women even need to try and be wealthy? Because if it was a book for a bloke it would be a very different book - it would just say 'let's be wealthy'," Melissa said.

"Women need a different journey for our finances ... so in (the book) I talk about things like how the nice girl and the good girl personas are holding us back.  I looked at how women are actually better investors than the blokes, yet 93 % of men and women think that they're worse, that we're more emotional, when actually that's actually the blokes."

Melissa also addressed the discomfort many women feel around money.

“For women particularly, it’s considered unfeminine to want to be too wealthy,” she said, highlighting studies showing that financial inequality and societal expectations can make investing and career progression feel risky.

Despite these challenges, Melissa stressed that practical steps can make a big difference when it comes to getting on top of your finances, She suggested focusing on clearing “bad debt” like credit cards and buy-now-pay-later services, finding ways to increase cash flow, unsubscribing from online retailers that encourage overspending, and starting small-scale, regular investing.

Alongside her books, Melissa also provides resources to support women in taking action. Her website, melissabrowne.com.au, includes a free guide outlining 20 ways to find $10,000 in 12 months, demonstrating that improving finances can be accessible and actionable.

Reflecting on her mission, Melissa encouraged others to “realize that finance can simpler than you think".

"Budgets and restrictions aren’t the only path. There’s a way to find more cash, invest, and expand—without feeling trapped or overwhelmed.”

With decades of experience under he belt nowadays, Melissa is encouraging women to step confidently into wealth, showing that with knowledge and small, consistent steps, financial freedom is within reach.
