Australia’s feedlot industry has significantly strengthened its biosecurity preparedness, as concern grows over the spread of livestock diseases in the region.

A new report from the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association and Meat & Livestock Australia highlights major improvements in readiness for emergency animal diseases.

The findings come as Lumpy Skin Disease continues to spread through parts of Southeast Asia, with a recent detection in Bali underscoring the potential risk to Australia.

Since 2022, the industry has rolled out new training programs, updated operational tools and strengthened national guidelines to improve prevention and response capability.

Nearly 250 participants have taken part in targeted training, while new resources and updates to the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme have reinforced best practice across the sector.

A central outcome has been the launch of a dedicated Biosecurity Hub, providing feedlot operators with streamlined access to tools, guidance and training opportunities.

Industry leaders say the work reflects a strong commitment to protecting animal health, market access and overall sector resilience in the face of emerging threats.

While the project has now concluded, further practical training workshops will be delivered across regional areas in the coming months to maintain momentum.
