A Dutch man has died while trying to help three acquaintances whose car had landed in a ditch while they were driving under the influence of alcohol, police say.
The man had tried to pull the car out of the ditch in the village of Hoogblokland with the help of a tractor, but the tractor overturned, crushing the 25-year-old, police said on Sunday.
The three others survived unharmed because they managed to climb out of the car.
In the Netherlands, about a third of which is below sea level, there are many watercourses and ditches, some of which are used to fence off fields.
There are special courses for drivers seeking to learn how to rescue themselves from their car if they end up in the water.
