Once Australian golf’s next big thing, Curtis Luck will make his return to the big stage at this week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland after several years in the golfing wilderness.

The 28-year-old, who won the prestigious US Amateur in 2016 before bursting onto the professional scene, is one of several great stories among the nine Australians set to tee it up in the 153rd edition of golf’s oldest major championship, which begins tomorrow.

Luck’s ironically luckless journey is only bettered in the resilience stakes among the Australian crop by former bikie turned New Zealand Open champion Ryan Peake, who spent five years in prison before turning his life around earning a major debut with his win in Queenstown in March.

Despite playing his way into one of the three Open qualifying spots at the Australian Open last December, Luck was not even able to play two weeks in a row during the Australian summer.

A bulging disc in his spine, as well as neck problems, have caused Luck such grief that he has to manage his body carefully.

He’s only played two events with Official World Golf Ranking points since the Australian Open, the most recent of which was the PGA Tour of Australasia’s season finale in March.
