Australia’s cherry industry is set to introduce a national quality standard, aimed at improving consistency and boosting consumer confidence.
The new three-year project will establish clear, evidence-based benchmarks to help growers deliver more reliable eating quality across each season.
While Australian cherries are known for their flavour, variability has been identified as a key issue affecting repeat purchases and overall demand.
Hort Innovation says consistency is critical to building trust with consumers and strengthening the industry’s reputation both domestically and in export markets.
The project will involve consultation with growers, supply chain monitoring, and sensory analysis to validate quality measures.
Producers will also receive technical support and practical tools to help meet the agreed standards.
The initiative is being led by Delytics, alongside supply chain specialists and research organisations, including CSIRO.
It’s hoped the program will drive long-term growth in the sector by improving product quality and increasing demand.
