New data from Meat & Livestock Australia shows Australian cattle producers remain broadly optimistic about the year ahead, despite mixed seasonal conditions across key regions.
According to the April 2026 Beef Production Intention Survey, six in ten producers say they are feeling positive about the outlook for the beef sector over the next 12 months.
More than 3,000 producers took part in the survey, with national sentiment steady at plus-53.
South Australia and Victoria recorded the strongest sentiment at plus-66, supported by improved seasonal conditions and stronger feed availability.
New South Wales and Queensland recorded softer confidence, with dry conditions, fuel costs and geopolitical uncertainty weighing on sentiment.
Results also revealed around a quarter of producers plan to increase herd numbers, while just over half intend to maintain current herd sizes.
MLA says seasonal conditions and prices remain the main drivers of confidence.
