The Australian beef industry has set a global benchmark in sustainability, releasing its 2025 Annual Update under the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework. The report shows record-breaking environmental progress, strong export performance, and a clear roadmap for future resilience.
Since 2005, the industry has cut its net carbon emissions by more than 70 per cent, largely due to increased carbon sequestration on grazing lands. Beef production reached an all-time high of 2.75 million tonnes, while waste to landfill from processors fell by more than 70 per cent in the past two years.
Patrick Hutchinson, Chair of the ABSF Steering Group, said the update was “more than a report card - it was a declaration of intent.”
“We are not just meeting expectations; we are setting them," he said.
"From animal welfare to climate resilience, the Australian beef industry is proving that sustainability is not a cost. It is a competitive advantage."
Mr Hutchinson said the industry had “shown the world that beef production can coexist with biodiversity,” and that “emissions can be reduced without compromising profitability.” Looking ahead, the Framework will focus on feed sourcing, improved traceability, and cross-sector innovation partnerships.
“The future of beef sustainability lies in collaboration and credibility. Retailers and investors want assurance, not anecdotes,” he said.
The Framework remains aligned with global reporting standards, reinforcing Australia’s position as a trusted leader in sustainable beef production.
