A new artificial intelligence-driven fire detection system is improving early bushfire response across South Australia’s south-east, identifying nearly 90 unplanned fires since its introduction.

The network of eight AI-powered cameras covers more than one million hectares in the Green Triangle region, delivering real-time alerts to emergency services.

Since its rollout, the system has detected 87 fires, including 12 during the current fire danger season, with most incidents recorded in the 2024–25 period.

Lightning strikes accounted for the majority of ignitions, alongside causes such as vehicle fires, electrical faults and escaped burn-offs.

The technology combines ultra-high-definition cameras, satellite data and human analysis to pinpoint fire location, size and risk to nearby communities and infrastructure.

Authorities say the system enables faster, more informed responses, while reminding the public to remain vigilant, as bushfires can occur at any time of year despite the official end of the fire season.
