Grain mill injury prompts machinery safety reminder

A New South Wales business has been fined $375,000 after a worker suffered serious injuries while using a grain mill to prepare cattle feed.

The incident occurred in January 2023, prompting a SafeWork NSW prosecution after the business pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of its workers.

SafeWork NSW Commissioner Janet Schorer says injuries involving fixed machinery are preventable hazards across the state and across all industries.

She says assessing risks and implementing safe systems of work are key to reducing incidents involving fixed machinery.

The Industrial Court of NSW also imposed an adverse publicity order, while the business retains the right to appeal against the sentence.

SafeWork NSW says businesses and workers can access resources to help identify and manage risks when working with grain mills and other machinery and equipment.
