AFL Round 11 Wrap

Jack Riewoldt (left) celebrates a Callum Coleman-Jones goal (centre)

A snapshot of round 11 in the AFL where Melbourne has taken the outright lead on the ladder and Jack Riewoldt took a special mark in Richmond's win over Adelaide.

SNAPSHOT OF ROUND 11 OF THE AFL SEASON

THEY SAID IT:

"It wasn't the perfect week, but our ability to deal with it and the maturity shown and our ability to execute what we were trying to do was outstanding."

- Simon Goodwin was full of praise for his Melbourne side after a COVID scare forced his side to isolate and undergo tests in the 48 hours before their top-of-the-table clash with the Bulldogs.

STATS THAT MATTER:

Collingwood finished a first-half goal-less for the first time since 2005 in an inept forward display. The Magpies saved some face with five junk-time goals in the final term, after just one in the previous three.

PLAYER OF THE ROUND:

Brisbane's Mitch Robinson bagged a carer-best four goals in his best-afield display for the high-flying Lions in their smashing of GWS. Robinson collected 30 disposals, took a dozen marks, had nine inside 50s and 10 score involvements.

KEY MOMENT:

Richmond's Jack Riewoldt channels his cousin Nick's famous 2004 mark when running with the flight of the ball. Adelaide was surging with four consecutive goals to get within nine points of the Tigers in the last quarter when Jack flew into an oncoming pack, pivoted mid-air, got the ride, and clunked an all-time classic. He converted the mark into a goal to steady his team en route to victory.

TALKING POINT:

While Melbourne takes the outright lead at the top of the ladder, the ongoing impact of Melbourne's coronavirus outbreak threatens to again wreak havoc on scheduling. Six teams have the bye next weekend which will make the AFL's task easier, but just where and when the remaining matches are contested is up in the air.

INJURIES:

Tim Kelly (WC, knee), Oscar Allen (WC, concussion), Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (Ess, head), Brodie Grundy (Cwd, neck), Ed Langdon (Melb, concussion), Riley Garcia (WB, head knock), Sam Berry (Adel, concussion).

WHAT'S NEXT:

Brisbane has a mouthwatering clash against table-topping Melbourne, at this stage scheduled to be played in Alice Springs but a possibility to be shifted, next Friday night. Other highlights include Essendon and Richmond meeting in the Dreamtime clash which has been shifted from the MCG to Perth, while Carlton host West Coast at the SCG, also instead of the MCG. The St Kilda versus Sydney clash, scheduled for Marvel Stadium, could also be moved to Sydney while Collingwood's fixture against Adelaide may be shifted to the South Australian capital.
