The CFA is urging Victorians to ensure wood heaters are used safely this winter after a house was destroyed by fire in East Gippsland.

Firefighters were called to a rural property at Hinnomunjie near Omeo last week, where they found the home fully engulfed. The sole occupant escaped unharmed after reportedly being alerted by his dog, while a passing motorist raised the alarm after spotting flames.

The fire is believed to have started from a wood heater, with investigators confirming the home did not have working smoke alarms installed.

CFA District 11 Commander Tony Ford says the incident is a timely reminder to regularly clean chimneys and flues, keep combustible materials at least one metre from heaters, never leave them unattended, and ensure smoke alarms are installed and tested.
