VISA DELAYS PUTTING HARVEST AT RISK

NSW Farmers is warning delays in Working Holiday Maker visa applications could leave farmers without the workers they need for the upcoming harvest.

The organisation says grain growers have already made arrangements with international workers, but uncertainty over visa processing means some may not arrive when they are needed.

NSW Farmers President Rebecca Reardon says farmers plan their workforce requirements months ahead and need confidence workers will be available when harvest begins.

Working Holiday Makers account for around 44 percent of the peak harvest workforce in horticulture, with NSW Farmers warning a shortage could leave crops unharvested and contribute to higher food prices.

NSW Farmers has joined more than 20 industry organisations in calling on the Federal Government to retain the current visa settings and get applications moving again.

Ms Reardon says Working Holiday Makers also provide an important economic contribution to regional communities, supporting accommodation providers, retailers, pubs, cafes and other local businesses.
