The Victorian Farmers Federation has unveiled seven priority areas it wants addressed in the upcoming Victorian State Budget, arguing strategic investment will strengthen agriculture’s role in the state economy.
In its submission, the VFF is calling for improved freight networks, protection of productive farmland and stronger pest and biosecurity measures.
It is also seeking greater drought preparedness, water security, rural healthcare and childcare access, investment in skills and innovation, and tougher action on rural crime.
VFF President, Brett Hosking, says Victoria’s $22 billion agriculture sector directly and indirectly employs more than 150,000 people.
He says with the right policy settings and targeted investment, the industry has capacity to significantly expand production, create jobs and lift export earnings.
Mr Hosking argues agriculture should be recognised as a critical pillar in driving the state out of debt and toward long-term prosperity.
He says benefits would extend beyond the farm gate, strengthening regional economies and supporting food security for all Victorians.
The federation is urging the State Government to back the sector in the May Budget, describing it as an investment in the future of the state.
