Transport Sector Welcomes Support Amid Fuel Cost Pressures

Australia’s peak road freight body has welcomed a billion-dollar government support package, as new figures reveal the majority of operators are struggling to stay afloat.

The National Road Transport Association says more than 70 per cent of transport businesses can only sustain operations for six months or less under current economic conditions.

Chief Executive Warren Clark says rising diesel prices are placing unprecedented strain on operators, with fuel now accounting for more than 40 per cent of total costs for most businesses.

The Federal Government’s support package includes interest-free loans and further fuel excise relief, measures Mr Clark says will provide much-needed short-term assistance.

He says the industry is facing significant cashflow pressures, and without intervention, supply chains could be at risk during an already volatile global period.

However, NatRoad warns the effectiveness of the package will depend on how quickly support can be delivered, with calls for simple and accessible systems to ensure operators remain on the road.
