The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is warning operators to remain vigilant, after new data revealed a sharp rise in dangerous trailer detachment incidents across Australia’s freight network.
Eight trailer drop incidents have already been recorded so far in 2026, effectively double the rate of the same period last year, with authorities also noting a recent history of serious and fatal crashes linked to multi-trailer separations.
NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati says while the industry is under pressure, safety must remain the highest priority, urging drivers to carry out thorough pre-start inspections before every journey.
Contributing factors include mechanical wear, operator error, improper loading and coupling failures, with drivers urged to inspect drawbars and towbars, secure air lines and chains, and complete walk-around checks and tug tests prior to departure.
The regulator is also encouraging operators to report safety concerns through its confidential reporting line, warning that unreported risks may contribute to further serious incidents on Australian roads.
