STRONG START TO STATE GRAIN SEASON AS LATEST DATA SHOWS IMPROVED OUTLOOK

Latest data from South Australia’s Crop and Pasture Report shows grain production is on track to exceed last year’s harvest, supported by early rainfall and improved seeding conditions across the state.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions forecasts production at around 9 million tonnes, with yield potential close to the 10-year average.

Improved soil moisture has driven a stronger start to the season, with growers progressing seeding programs across most regions and expanding cropped area compared to last year.

Early rainfall has also supported crop establishment and paddock access, although follow-up rain will still be needed in some areas to maintain momentum.

The report says lentils remain a key growth crop, now the state’s third largest by area, with further expansion expected this season.

PIRSA says while the season has opened positively, seasonal variability, pest pressure and input costs continue to influence farm decision-making.
