Rural Aid Warns Mounting Pressure On Farmer Wellbeing

Regional charity Rural Aid is warning of mounting mental health pressures across rural Australia, as conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global fuel and fertiliser supplies.
The organisation says it’s not just rising costs driving stress for farmers and their families, but the uncertainty around how long current conditions will last.
Rural Aid Mental Health and Wellbeing Manager Myf Pitcher says unpredictability is one of the most damaging factors.
She says farmers are facing rising prices with no clear ceiling, and are being forced to make major financial decisions without knowing where input costs will land.
Rural Aid says the pressure is building alongside a period of climate vulnerability, with an El Niño pattern forecast to bring extended dry conditions across large parts of the country.
That’s as many farming families continue to recover from a summer of bushfires, cyclones and severe storms.
The organisation says higher fuel costs are also limiting travel, increasing isolation, while fewer visitors to regional areas are beginning to impact local businesses and community wellbeing.
Rural Aid is urging farmers and their families not to carry the load alone, with free, confidential support available on 1300 175 594 or via ruralaid.org.au.
