REMINDER: SCHOOL ZONES DON’T TAKE A HOLIDAY

South Australian motorists are being reminded that school zones don’t take a break during the school holidays, with the RAA urging drivers to slow down and remain alert for children when driving around schools.
The RAA says the 25km/h speed limits on local roads around schools continue whenever a child is present, including during school holidays, weekends and public holidays.
The limit applies when a child is on the road, footpath or median strip within the school zone, with a child defined as anyone under 18, or a student of any age wearing a school uniform.
The separate 40km/h school precinct limits on main roads are time-based, operating on school days between 8am and 9.30am, and 2pm and 4pm.
RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain says motorists should look for school zone signs and white zigzag markings and be ready to reduce their speed when they see a child.
“School might be out, but the 25km/h speed limits on local roads near schools still applies whenever children are present in a school zone," he says.
Comparatively, the 40km/h limits do not apply during school holidays, weekends or public holidays, and will return from Monday, October 12.
