Regional roads in Victoria are continuing to deteriorate, with new figures reported in the Herald Sun revealing potholes have increased by as much as 178 per cent in western parts of the state. Victorian Farmers Federation President Brett Hosking says the worsening road conditions are a serious safety hazard and a significant economic burden for local communities.
“The tragic reality is you are much more likely to lose your life when driving on country roads when compared to driving in the city,” Mr Hosking said. “Drivers are expected to maintain roadworthy cars. It’s time for cars to drive car-worthy roads to ensure drivers aren’t playing a daily game of roads roulette.”
The VFF is calling for a sustained investment plan, including $250 million for local councils to repair and upgrade local roads, alongside increased funding for state and federal highways. The association says improving road infrastructure is essential to support safe travel, efficient freight, and thriving regional economies.
