South Australian producers are being urged to take extra care during summer weed spraying, as compliance officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regions prepare to monitor chemical use across the state.

Recent rain and warmer conditions have increased weed growth, prompting a rise in spraying activity.

Producers are reminded that all chemical use must comply with label instructions and general duty obligations, with penalties of up to $35,000 applying for deliberate or negligent misuse.

Particular care should be taken to protect neighbouring properties and sensitive crops, including vineyards, which may be affected even at long distances.

PIRSA also warns against spraying during hazardous temperature inversion conditions, which typically occur overnight and in the early morning hours, allowing chemicals to travel further off-target.

Suspected spray drift incidents can be reported anonymously to the Spray Drift Hotline.

Authorities say early reporting helps protect both agricultural industries and the broader environment.
