Police investigate fatal crash near Penola

South East Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early this morning south of Penola.


At about 7.30 am today police and emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash on the Riddoch Highway about 10 kilometres south of Penola.


Sadly the driver of the Commodore, a 25-year-old Mount Gambier man, died at the scene. His passenger, a 24-year-old Mount Gambier woman, was taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.


The Riddoch Highway will remain closed for several hours while Major Crash investigators examine the crash scene. Traffic heading south is being diverted along Mount Burr Road towards Kalangadoo and traffic heading north is diverted along Nangwarry Road.


The man's death is the 95th life lost on South Australian roads so far this year. The road toll at the same time last year was 90.
