NSW HOLIDAYMAKERS URGED TO REMAIN VIGILANT FOR AVIAN INFLUENZA

As families head to beaches, national parks and popular coastal destinations these school holidays, the NSW Government is urging people to be aware of H5 avian influenza, or bird flu, and know what to do if they come across sick or dead wildlife.

People are being reminded not to touch or handle wildlife, and to follow the advice to “Avoid, Record, Report” if they encounter an affected animal.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development says while the virus has not yet been detected in commercial poultry flocks or captive birds, and the risk to human health remains low, community vigilance is important in managing the spread of the disease.

Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Jo Coombe says H5 avian influenza is having a significant impact on wild bird populations, with community vigilance important to detecting new cases and limiting its spread.

"It’s important to keep children and pets away from sick or dead birds and other wildlife," says.

Dog owners are being urged to keep pets on a leash in wildlife areas, while cats should be kept indoors or in secure enclosures. Sick or dead wildlife showing signs of H5 avian influenza can be reported through the online system or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
