New South Wales’ peak farm body says practical fixes are urgently needed to the state’s new firearms laws, warning uncertainty is creating confusion across regional NSW.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin says sweeping changes introduced without consultation have left producers unsure whether they’re complying with the law.

He says firearms are essential and often expensive tools of trade, and the regulatory settings must reflect real on-farm needs.

The group wants fair compensation under any buyback scheme, including ammunition and accessories, based on market value before December 14, 2025.

It’s also calling for exemptions from mandatory gun club membership for agricultural workers, and greater flexibility around proposed firearm caps.

NSW Farmers says the Firearms Regulation must not be rushed, urging proper consultation to avoid unintended impacts on biosecurity and food production.
