Mouse Activity Raises Concern Ahead of Seeding in South Australia

Grain producers across South Australia are being urged to monitor mouse activity closely, as populations rise ahead of the 2026 seeding program.

New data from CSIRO indicates moderate to high and increasing mouse densities across key regions, including the Adelaide Plains and Yorke Peninsula, with potential for a broader outbreak.

Grain Producers SA Chief Executive Brad Perry says the warning comes at a critical time, with growers preparing paddocks for sowing.

He says even low levels of activity, such as a handful of active burrows, should be treated as an early warning sign requiring immediate attention.

Producers are being encouraged to undertake paddock inspections, reduce food sources, and prepare baiting programs early to minimise crop damage.

Industry groups are also continuing to push for improved access to more effective baiting options, as growers face mounting cost pressures and seasonal uncertainty.
