Mouse Activity Prompts Seeding Alert for Grain Growers

Grain Producers Australia is urging growers to remain vigilant ahead of seeding, following increased reports of mouse activity emerging in Western Australia.

The warning comes as growers across the country prepare for the upcoming season, with conditions being closely monitored.

Reports from areas including Geraldton and Ravensthorpe have shown mice moving through paddocks and stubble, raising concern as activity appears earlier than expected.

While the extent of the issue is still unclear, industry leaders warn mouse populations can escalate rapidly if early signs are missed.

Producers are being encouraged to inspect paddocks for indicators such as fresh burrows, particularly where grain remains after harvest. Chew cards and night-time checks can also help confirm activity levels.

Experts say early detection is critical, with baiting most effective at sowing when food sources are limited. Growers are advised to plan ahead and secure supplies.

Updated monitoring advice from CSIRO is expected shortly, but industry groups say on-farm observation remains the first line of defence.
