Mixed Season Reported Across Victorian Horticulture

By Jessica Dempster
The Victorian Farmers Federation Horticulture Council has reported mixed fortunes across the state's horticulture sector, with strong prices for apples and pears contrasting with significant challenges in other industries.
The Council says late-season stone fruit is outperforming early varieties, while cherries are also having a good season and are providing competitive returns.
However, table grape growers are facing difficulties with market access and production, while the wine industry remains under significant pressure.
The Council also says pollination has fallen well short of requirements, with a shortage of bees resulting in more hives being directed towards almonds, while beekeepers continue to deal with varroa mite.
Irrigation infrastructure is another concern, with the VFF warning of increasing competition from housing development and a need for upgrades.
The Council has also raised concerns about labour shortages, input costs, agricultural chemicals and access to workers, including the impacts of visa changes and skills shortages across Victorian farms.
