South Australian sheep and goat producers have received four-point-seven million dollars in tag discounts and rebates during the first year of mandatory electronic identification.

More than six-point-one million electronic identification tags were purchased in 2025 as part of the national transition to individual livestock traceability for sheep and farmed goats.

Under current rules, all sheep and goats born from January first last year must carry an accredited electronic tag before leaving their property of birth, with movements recorded on the National Livestock Identification System database.

The State Government says more than 474-thousand electronically tagged sheep were transferred between farming properties during 2025, a significant increase from just 18-thousand transfers recorded the previous year.

Since 2023, more than 14 million dollars has been invested to support the roll-out, including rebates for tags, infrastructure and equipment, as well as education programs aimed at helping producers adopt the technology.

Additional funding will keep tag rebates available until June 2027, while equipment rebates for producers, schools and agricultural events remain open until June 30 this year.
