Major fires continue to burn across Victoria

Weeks after Victoria’s Catastrophic Fire Danger Day on January 9, seven major bushfires are continuing to burn across the state.

The Country Fire Authority says some of those fires could continue for days or even weeks, as crews manage complex and unpredictable conditions.

More than 435 thousand hectares have already been burned during what’s been Victoria’s longest heatwave event since 2009.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan says the state is experiencing one of the most intense fire seasons seen in years.

He says the commitment of volunteers, many of whom have spent extended time away from family and work, has been critical in protecting regional towns.

On the Catastrophic Fire Danger Day itself, firefighters responded to almost 200 grass and scrub fires across Victoria.

Since early January, the CFA has attended more than 3,300 incidents, placing sustained pressure on volunteers and support crews.

In response, the CFA last week held a volunteer forum at Harcourt, providing an opportunity to reflect on the January fires and their ongoing impacts.

During this time, the CFA says it is prioritising the safety and wellbeing of its members, and encourages anyone needing support to contact its free, 24-hour services on 1800 959 232.

The Victorian Government’s Bushfire Recovery Hotline is also available on 1800 560 760.
