LIVESTOCK SA CALLS FOR Q FEVER VACCINATION SUBSIDY

By Jessica Dempster
Livestock SA is calling on the State Government to subsidise Q fever testing and vaccination for livestock workers, warning the cost of protection remains a barrier for some of those most at risk.
The peak livestock body has written to Health and Wellbeing Minister Blair Boyer seeking a targeted subsidy, amid concerns about rising case numbers and the potential for serious, long-term illness.
Chief Executive Officer Travis Tobin said seven cases were reported to SA Health in the first six months of this year, following 30 cases in 2025 and 23 in 2024.
He said people working with sheep, cattle and goats faced ongoing exposure, with some experiencing prolonged fatigue and extended absences from work.
Livestock SA says affordable access to preventative measures could help protect workers and reduce pressure on agricultural businesses already facing workforce shortages.
