"Let down for way too long" - cop candidate calls for more police in northwestern Vic

Rikki Lambert

A Victorian Liberal candidate and serving police officer says regional Victoria needs more police and training in issues affecting country people.

Paul Matheson is running in the northwestern Victorian seat of Mildura, covering the border rural city and outlying towns including Ouyen, Hopetoun, Birchip and Wycheproof. The police officer of 26 years' experience told Flow on Thursday:

"We've been let down for way too long. We need more police in regional areas, we need people to understand what country policing is about, especially around livestock and theft.
"Crime is a massive issue for regional Victoria. We have some of the highest crime rates up here in Sunraysia. It's great people are reporting crime, there comes a time enough's enough, what's not working for our community?"
