Agriculture Victoria is urging horse owners to ensure animals are fully included in bushfire and emergency planning as fire danger increases.
Veterinary Officer Dr Lee Manning said preparation is critical to protecting both people and animals.
“Having a clear fire plan gives owners time to practise and establish priorities, particularly if it involves moving horses early to a safer location,” Dr Manning said.
She advised preparing a large, low-fuel “safer” area with secure fencing and a reliable water source.
On high fire danger days, owners are encouraged to move horses into safer areas and remove all gear.
“Rugs get tangled, halters get hot and burn, and fly veils may melt,” Dr Manning said.
“Being naked gives your horse the best chance of survival.”
Dr Manning warned against last-minute evacuations, saying they are often unrealistic.
“Horses’ flight instincts may see them run through flames - and unfortunately, through people - so they must be left free to survive,” she said.
Owners are advised to consult local fire authorities and practice their plans well ahead of an emergency.
