HARVEST WORKFORCE CONCERNS REMAIN DESPITE GOVERNMENT CORRECTION

Grain Producers Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent decision to prioritise migration for key industries including agriculture, but says concerns remain over labour shortages ahead of this year’s grain harvest, following a recent slowdown in Working Holiday visa processing.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced on Thursday that agriculture would be added to a priority list for visa processing, allowing a return to normal processing times for Working Holiday visa applications.

GPA Chair Matthew Madden says many grain growers rely on backpacker labour during harvest, and some producers have already reported a decline in migrant applications following the slowdown in visa processing announced in August.

Mr Madden says the grain industry is already facing challenges including higher input costs and supply pressures, and warned labour shortages could place additional strain on farm businesses.

GPA says it will continue advocating for migration settings that support food and grain production, while ensuring growers can access the workers they need during critical periods such as harvest.
