GRAINGROWERS URGE BUDGET ACTION ON FOOD SECURITY

GrainGrowers is calling on the Federal Government to make national food security a priority in the May Budget, as global tensions drive up the cost of key farm inputs.

The organisation says conflict in the Middle East is creating uncertainty around the supply of fuel and fertiliser, just as Australian grain growers prepare for winter planting.

Chief Executive Shona Gawel says the situation has highlighted the nation’s heavy reliance on imports, leaving the sector exposed to global supply disruptions.

GrainGrowers is now urging the government to invest in domestic manufacturing capability, including support for ethanol production, low-carbon liquid fuels, and fast-tracking the Perdaman urea project.

The group is also seeking 50 million dollars over four years for a national, industry-led approach to farmer mental health, citing growing pressure across regional communities.

GrainGrowers warns any reduction in production would have ripple effects throughout the supply chain, from regional businesses to food prices for Australian households.

It says strengthening sovereign capability now will be critical to safeguarding the nation’s long-term food security.
