Grain Producers Australia says a nationwide survey has revealed significant uncertainty among growers about new workplace exposure limits for grain dust, due to take effect from December 1.

The changes will reduce the eight-hour time-weighted average exposure limit from four milligrams per cubic metre of air to 1.5 milligrams.

Almost 500 growers responded to the survey, with 91 per cent concerned about their ability to measure, monitor and manage the lower limit.

The results also found 99 per cent did not know how they would measure grain dust exposure in their businesses, while 97 per cent were unsure how to manage the changes.

A further 96 per cent said they did not know where to find more information about the requirements.

GPA Chair Matthew Madden says growers are committed to workplace safety but lack clarity about how to implement the new limits in their operations.

He says the organisation is frustrated by the lack of engagement with the grain sector during the process, arguing growers need clear communication when regulatory requirements change.

Grain Producers Australia says the survey will help inform its next steps in supporting growers as the new exposure limits approach.
