Grain Producers Australia will continue advocating for reform of the nation’s grains levy system, despite the Federal Agriculture Minister declining to support its proposal in its current form.
The Minister’s response follows discussion at Senate Estimates into levy settings and the progress of GPA’s review.
GPA Chair Barry Large says the organisation respects the decision but maintains the case for reform remains strong.
He notes reserves held by the Grains Research and Development Corporation are projected to reach one billion dollars this year, prompting calls for greater transparency and grower oversight.
The levy review, launched in 2022, examined whether current arrangements remain fit-for-purpose for a modern and expanding grains industry.
It included national consultation and an independent grower survey focused on accountability and return on investment.
GPA says it will now work closely with GrainGrowers Limited and other industry partners to progress practical next steps in levy reform discussions.
