Fuel Taskforce Welcomed as Pressure Mounts on Diesel Supply

Farming groups have cautiously welcomed outcomes from last week’s National Cabinet fuel meeting, while warning urgent action is still needed to secure diesel supplies for agriculture.

National Farmers’ Federation President Hamish McIntyre says the appointment of a Fuel Supply Taskforce Coordinator is a step in the right direction.

He says empty pumps and unfilled diesel orders are adding stress for farmers working within tight harvest and planting windows, and is calling for clear government guidance on how fuel will be delivered into regional areas.

Mr McIntyre says the Government must outline what triggers would prompt further intervention if supply issues persist.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin says securing diesel access for agriculture and the broader food supply chain must be the first priority, warning regional prices are rising, in some cases above three dollars per litre.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it is investigating allegations of anti-competitive behaviour among major fuel suppliers, particularly in regional diesel markets.
