Free Diagnostic Program Strengthens Nursery Biosecurity

Australia's nursery industry is continuing to strengthen its biosecurity defences through a national diagnostic program helping growers identify pests and diseases before they spread.

Funded by Hort Innovation and delivered by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, the service provides every nursery business with up to six free diagnostic tests each year, allowing plant samples to be assessed by specialists.

Survey results show 89% of participants found the advice relevant to their business, while 84% used the recommendations to resolve issues and improve on-farm management.

More than half reported a reduction in pest and disease incidence, while 43% recorded lower management costs following participation in the program.

Industry leaders say the initiative supports healthier nursery stock and provides confidence for horticultural sectors including fruit and tree crop producers that rely on disease-free plants. The levy-funded diagnostic service will continue under a new national biosecurity support program.
