The Federal Government has announced changes to streamline fertiliser imports in an effort to improve supply and reduce costs for Australian farmers, while maintaining biosecurity protections.

New measures will reduce clearance times at ports and lower administrative costs for importers following consultation with industry.

The reforms include offshore certification of shipments, targeted inspection requirements for higher-risk imports, and simplified compliance processes for approved supply pathways.

Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says the changes are designed to improve efficiency in the supply chain while maintaining strict biosecurity standards.

“We understand how important fertiliser is for Australian farmers and our food production system,” the Minister said.

“That’s why the Albanese Labor Government is working closely with industry to help get fertiliser to farmers faster.”

The Government says the reforms will help ease supply pressures linked to global market disruptions, while ensuring Australia’s biosecurity system is not compromised.

Industry groups have welcomed the move, saying it will help improve reliability of fertiliser supply ahead of seasonal demand.
