Farmers Welcome Firearms Cap Decision

The Victorian Farmers Federation has welcomed the State Government’s decision not to cap firearm ownership by primary producers as part of a broader overhaul of the state’s gun laws.

The changes follow the Rapid Review into Victoria’s Firearm Laws, which led the Government to accept 15 of 16 recommendations aimed at strengthening regulation and community safety.

The reforms include tougher penalties for firearms trafficking, stricter licensing requirements and expanded police powers to respond to emerging threats such as 3D-printed firearms.

However, the Government has ruled out firearm caps, saying the focus remains on targeting illegal gun use rather than restricting lawful owners.

VFF Acting President Peter Star says the decision reflects the realities of farming businesses across Victoria and supports sensible safety reforms.

He says the federation will continue to engage with government on remaining changes, including licensing and compliance requirements.
