Farmers Urged to Check Dams After Winter Rain

Agriculture Victoria is encouraging farmers to inspect farm dams following widespread rainfall across the state's north-east.

With many dams now reaching capacity after a dry start to winter, producers are being urged to check spillways for debris, inspect dam walls for signs of overtopping, and ensure enough freeboard remains to safely manage overflow.

Agriculture Recovery Officer Ben Muller says full dams also provide an ideal opportunity to calculate storage capacity and develop water budgets ahead of the warmer months.

Farmers are also being reminded to monitor water quality, restrict livestock access where needed to prevent contamination, and consider longer-term improvements such as reticulation systems and revegetating dam edges to improve water security.
