Farm sector disappointed by higher US tariffs

The National Farmers' Federation has criticised the United States' decision to increase tariffs on Australian exports from 10 to 12.5%.

The peak farm body says the move creates another unnecessary trade barrier, despite the Australia–United States Free Trade Agreement providing for tariff-free trade between the two countries.

Chief Executive Michael Guerin says the increase is disappointing for Australian exporters, particularly when some competing countries will face a lower tariff rate.

While key exports including Australian beef appear to remain exempt, Mr Guerin says the decision still sends the wrong signal for global trade and adds uncertainty for Australian agriculture.

The Federation says it will continue working with government to protect Australia's trade interests and expand access to markets that value the country's high-quality food and fibre.
