EGG INDUSTRY PREPARES FOR LONG-TERM BIRD FLU RISK

The Australian egg industry is preparing for a longer-term threat from H5 avian influenza, following detections of the virus in wild birds across the country.

Australian Eggs Managing Director Rowan McMonnies says transmission between Australian wildlife indicates H5 bird flu is likely to remain established in the medium term, meaning producers face a more challenging operating environment.

The industry is responding by maintaining strict biosecurity measures, including efforts to deter wild birds and reduce contact with commercial poultry. Producers and authorities have also strengthened response procedures to help affected farms recover more quickly.

Mr McMonnies says Australia is in a relatively strong position to manage the threat, with egg production spread across a broad geographic area and more time to prepare than many overseas markets.

Australian Eggs is also examining longer-term options to reduce the risk, including the feasibility of vaccination against highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Despite the threat, Mr McMonnies says egg production remains unaffected, with more than twenty million eggs consumed each day and eggs continuing to be safe to eat with no risk to human health.
