Easter Road Safety Warning as Fatal Heavy Vehicle Crashes Rise

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is urging motorists to take extra care on the roads this Easter, following a rise in fatal crashes involving trucks on Australian roads.

More than 190 fatal incidents involving heavy vehicles were recorded last year, resulting in over 200 deaths — an increase on the previous year.

NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati says the holiday period brings added risk, with more people travelling longer distances and a higher likelihood of fatigue and distraction.

He says while most drivers do the right thing, safety must remain the priority across the industry.

Data shows fatigue continues to be a leading factor in serious crashes, with drivers reminded they must not operate vehicles while impaired — regardless of schedules or deadlines.

The regulator says responsibility also extends to employers and operators, who must ensure safe work and rest practices are followed.

Motorists are also being reminded that trucks need more space to stop and have significant blind spots, while heavy vehicle drivers are urged to slow down, remain patient and stay alert, with the message that every road user has a role to play in preventing tragedy this Easter.
